The Jewish tradition of
"breaking a glass"
is meant to bring the happy couple good luck! Near the end of the ceremony, it is customary that a glass, contained in a pouch, is place on the floor. The groom shatters the glass with his foot resulting in "Many Pieces, Many Years and Many Blessings together" for the couple. Those in attendance respond with "Mazel Tov"!
Tossing the garter is a tradition dating back to 14th Century France. It was believed that sections of the bridal attire would bring good fortune. At the wedding, the bride would throw the garter to the assembled guests and shower the recipient with good luck. Now it is customary for the groom to remove the garter and toss it to a group of unmarried men. The "catcher" is thought to be the next to marry. The garter is placed on the bride's right leg, just above the knee. She may wear one garter to throw and a second garter designed to be cherished keepsake.
